Prison authorities in Nimba County are said to be rejecting suspects forwarded to jail at the Sanniquellie Central Prison.
Sources closed to the Justice System in the county disclosed that drug and other suspects from the Liberia National Police (LNP) forwarded to prison have been turned back by prison authorities on ground that the prison is over crowded with pre-trial detainees.
A correction officer at Sanniquellie Central Prison disclosed that the prison is built to host 75 inmates but currently the center over crowded with over 198 inmates.
He told The NEWS via phone on Wednesday, January 10, 2017 that significant number of those detained at the facility is pre-trial detainees. He expressed fear of an imminent outbreak of disease when the prison is not decongested. “We cannot take in new inmates because all of our cells are filled,” he stressed.
According to him, some of the suspects detained beyond the statutory period, are there because of simple assault and theft.
Some residents of the commercial district of Ganta have expressed fear over the refusal of the prison to take in inmates, some of whom they claim pose danger to the public.
