...In Nat'l County Meet
Four of Liberia's counties were the scenes of spectacular soccer and kickball actions over the weekend as the National County Sports Meet kicks off.
In Harper City where the formal opening ceremony was held saw Maryland and Rivergee counties settling in a goalless draw in the football category, while Maryland won the kickball encounter 32 to 3 home runs.
The competition continued on Sunday with Grand Kru County defeating Grand Gedeh County by 2-1 in the football encounter and Grand Gedeh won the kickball feat by 15-11 home runs.
Elsewhere, Nimba and Bong settled to a goalless draw at the Sanniquellie sports pitch, while Nimba won the kickball match 15-7 home runs.
At the Kakata sports pitch, defending champions Margibi County began her quest for a double championship on a disappointing note following a 1-0 defeat to the Gbehzohn boys of Grand Bassa County in football and was also defeated by Grand Bassa in the kickball match by 4-1 home runs as well. In the second match at the same venue, Rivercess beat Sinoe 5- 1 home runs in kickball, while Sinoe edged Rivercess 2-1 in the football match.
The tournament continued at the Momoh Taweh sports pitch in Robertsports where Cape Mount lost to Montserrado by 2-0 in the football showdown and won the kickball 12- 6 home runs.
Montserrado County striker Darlington Hill got the opener for Montserrado 12 minutes into the match through a perfect finish as a result of mixed calculation by defenders of Cape Mount.
Minutes later, Cape Mount had the chance of making a come back when player Varney Jalebah with only goalie Sekou Baryo to contend with kicked the ball over the goal post thereby sending both team for recess.
Back from the break, Cape Mount had several opportunities to get the equalizer but poor finishing touches from their strikers kept their hopes at bay as Montserrado County deepen their woes in the 79th minutes of play through a goal from Emmanuel George.
It was a disappointing afternoon for Cape Mount who hoped of getting a victory as one of the hosts became a distance from reality following the defeat. Spectators at the stadium stood in complete disappointment as Montserrado County became the side that took the street of Robertsports in jubilation.
In the second match at the same venue, Bomi County was made to pay the price from resilience Gbapolu squad that won the game 2-1 in football and 14-8 home runs in kickball as well.
The competition continues today with Maryland versus Grand Gedeh in both kickball and football, Grand Kru versus Rivergee in both kickball and football.
Montserrado County would be hoping to continue its winning spree when they entertain Bomi County as Cape Mount would be hopeful of a win when they engage Gbapolu County in both kickball and football as well.
Defending champions Margibi County would welcome Rivercess in what soccer enthusiasts referred to as a 'do or die' encounter following their defeat to Bassa and Sinoe counties. Sinoe would meet Grand Bassa in football and kickball, while Bong meets Lofa in Kickball and football as well.
