The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has announced that 32 schools have been selected to sit the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in 2013.  The Senior Certificate Exam is a pilot project for Liberia.

The announcement was made last Friday following a five-day meeting of various committees of WAEC.

During the meeting at WAEC Headquarters in Congo Town, committees discussed examination malpractices, reports from feedbacks from chief examiners and increment in the exam fees for 9th and 12th graders.

Speaking during the end of the meeting, the Statutory Chairman of WAEC, Dr. Mator M. F. Kpangbai said after the pilot project by the 32 schools, all high schools in the country will be included.

Although he did not to disclose the names of the 32 schools, Dr. Kpangbai who is Deputy Minister for Instruction at the Ministry of Education expressed gratitude to the Registrar of WAEC for the support given to the Liberian government to enable the country join WASSCE.
 
“The government urged the National Office to intensify efforts toward the full deployment of ICT in data capture, result processing and other aspects of the examination in the days ahead,” Deputy Minister Kpangbai noted.
 
According to the Chief government nominee to WAEC, the committee noted with dismay reports that some school authorities were in the habit of submitting falsified assessment scores for students.
 
Deputy Minister Kpangbai stressed that WAEC and the Ministry of Education will ensure that schools involved in submitting fake scores for students will be identified and face appropriate disciplinary measures.
 
“The Liberia Administrative and Finance Committee noted with concern reports that the cost of executing the Council's mandate in Liberia had increased considerably in recent times due to rising costs of goods and services and UNMIL's withdrawal assistance in certain areas of operation,” Kpangbai said.
 
The Deputy Education Minister said the Committees approved minimal increases in the WAEC fees for 9th and 12th graders. He added that the increase in fees is aimed at assisting WAEC office to function efficiently in the years ahead.
 
He further stressed that the committees considered reports on cases of examination irregularities and will apply the sanctions prescribed by the Council's rules and regulations against candidates who are found guilty of examination malpractices.
 
“The committees also condemned in strong terms the behavior of some candidates who disrupted WAEC examination at Calvary Temple AGM, and we express confidence that the punitive measure taken against them would serve as deterrent,” Deputy Minister Kpangbai said.
 
He said the committees commended WAEC for consistently producing statistics and Chief Examiners reports on its examination feedback mechanism, noting that the government, corporate organizations, donor agencies and philanthropist should encourage excellent performances in public examination by giving awards.
