“US, Liberia Partnership Will Not Change”

…Despite Obama’s Reelection; Amb. Malac Assures
United States Ambassador Deborah Malac said her government’s support to Liberia will not change despite the outcome of Tuesday’s election.
Ambassador Malac told a cross-section of Liberians Tuesday night at her residence in Monrovia that United States will continue to support Liberia’s efforts to rebuild and achieve a brighter future for all Liberians.
Speaking hours before the re-election of President Obama, US Ambassador Malac said “What I do want to be clear about, however, is that regardless whether President Obama is re-elected or Mitt Romney wins-the partnership between the United States and Liberia will not change.”
She disclosed that the event at her home was not intended to celebrate the victory of a particular candidate.
“We hold these events to celebrate the triumph of democratic process and to showcase the strength of our democratic institutions,” Ambassador Malac emphasized.
The US Envoy indicated that “for without doubt, regardless of who wins this election tonight, the United States will be as strong tomorrow as we are today. This certainly comes from the fact that our institutions are strong. They have and will outlast the individuals and parties that we choose to steward them for four or eight years.”
Commenting on Liberia’s elections and democratic rule, Ambassador Malac indicated that it is the institutions of government, a people’s confidence in those institutions and the responsiveness of those institutions and the voice of the people that are essential hallmarks of vibrant and successful democracies.
She believes that it takes time to build those institutions and added that “we have been at it in the United States for more than 235 years, and it is still a work in progress”.
Ambassador Malac lauded Liberians for progress they have made in building and strengthening their institutions, but noted that there is always more to be done.
She told the gathering that the US government looks forward to doing its part to support Liberia further democratic progress.
The program attracted several officials of government, politicians and civil society representatives.
