Vice President Joseph N. Boakai has urged members of the Liberian Constitution Review Committee (CRC) to take the challenge and confidence repose in them by the Liberian government with seriousness and patriotism. He said President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and the government’s desire of making Liberia one of Africa’s strongest democracies that brings all voices together in a national forum to reform the constitution and reconcile the country’s politics should not be overlooked.

Speaking at the CRC consultative and interactive forum in Monrovia, the Liberian Vice President said President Johnson-Sirleaf has seen the need of rekindling the hopes of the Liberian people in the democratic course that the nation has embarked upon.   

He said the Liberian leader has underscored the need to construct the pillars on which the newly found peace and stability stand on a solid foundation that is grounded in unshakable commitment to protecting and upholding the democratic principles, rather than solely relying on the armed forces.

“We cannot therefore but urge you, members of the Constitution Review Committee, to take your challenge with the utmost seriousness-driven by the highest display of patriotism…we pray that our visit here today will help inspire you to aspire for the best of outcomes that this enterprise can bring our nation,” Vice President Boakai said.   

He encouraged stakeholders, political parties, civil society organizations and other groups in the country to take maximum advantage of the forum to make it the best it can be.  

Veep Boakai pledged the government fullest support to the Committee in the discharge of their national duty.  

The Chairperson of the CRC, former Chief Justice and former Senator, Cllr. Gloria Musu-Scott said the Committee was charged with the responsibility to thoroughly review the 1986 Constitution and make recommendations for the amendment of the Constitution, among other things.  

Cllr. Scott said the Committee is also charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the Constitution conforms to the country’s post conflict democratic realities and aspirations.  

The Committee, according to Cllr. Scott, is expected to also review the term of office of the President, Vice President and legislators as well as judges and justices and to determine whether they require amendment.  

Participants and other stakeholders at the program pledged their support to the process.
