President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has urged universities and institutions of learning across Liberia to improve the quality of services provided to the country's education sector.
President Johnson-Sirleaf said the provision of quality education to the student populace rests in the hands of higher learning institutions.
She observed that the achievement of the country's long term development agenda requires the input of a well informed population with quality educational foundation.
President Johnson-Sirleaf made the statement Wednesday at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville when she served as keynote speaker at the 93rd commencement convocation of the University of Liberia.
She said the nation depends heavily on human capital to help tackle the emerging challenges for growth and development, stressing that such cannot be achieved in the absence of prepared people.
She said her government is observing higher learning institutions with keen interest as to the quality of services they provide.
She told the graduates that every university is intended to produce the human capital needed for the realization of national, social and economic improvement of the country, which must be of quality and relevance.
She said higher institutions should not be complacent because Liberia is in desperate need of manpower.
“Should we be complacent in the quality of service we have right now, the answer is no. We need to improve the quality of service and output to make meaningful contributions to our existing objectives,” she stressed.
She said an informed nation makes a sound decision and wants those molding the minds of decision makers to provide quality service.
However, President Johnson-Sirleaf has urged the graduates of the state run University of Liberia to prove their wealth to improve the image of the country after years of civil crisis.
President Johnson-Sirleaf said the country was in desperate need of qualified Liberians who can contribute to face emerging challenges.
In remarks, UL President Dr. Emmett Dennis assured the public that the university remains committed to providing quality education.
Dr. Dennis said the state run university needs more financial assistance to improve the provision of quality education to students.
The 93rd commencement convocation saw 1,820 of students walking out of the wall of the University of the Liberia.
