Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has approved US$25 million for the rehabilitation of Monrovia power system. The amount is approximately 2.037 billion Japanese Yen.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Japanese Ambassador to Liberia, Naoto Nikai said the cost for electricity in Liberia is amongst the highest priorities in Africa. He said Japan knows the problem of Liberia's power sector and was grateful to contribute in helping to address the electricity needs of the country.

The Monrovia power rehabilitation is expected to last for a period of two years and will be implemented by Japan together with the Liberia Electricity and the Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy.

Ambassador Nikai said Japanese consultants and contractors will remain in Liberia during the project period to coordinate activities with the LEC. He said the Japanese government has expressed optimism that the project will contribute towards stable power supply to Monrovia, including schools and hospitals, among others.

In remarks, Liberia Foreign Minister Augustine K. Ngafuan lauded Japan for its timely intervention to process leading to the rehabilitation of the Monrovia Power Rehabilitation System; describing the grant as a good Christmas for the people of Liberia.

The rehabilitation process seeks to construct a new power house for the installation of 10 Mega Watt heavy fuel oil and fired medium speed diesel generators and the supply of maintenance vehicle to the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC).
