In keeping with the Liberian Government's efforts to modernize the country's security forces, an officer of the Liberia National Coast Guard has completed training at the prestigious International Maritime Officers School in Virginia, United States of America.

Lieutenant Stephen V. Mulbah of the Liberia National Coast Guard was among 40 officers from 28 countries to receive course completion certificates after 15 weeks of training at the International Maritime Officers School in Yorktown, Virginia.

During an impressive graduation ceremony held on December 6, 2012, Lieutenant Mulbah was presented certificate by Mr. Gabriel I.H. Williams, Minister Counselor for Press and Public Affairs, who deputized for Liberia's Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Jeremiah C. Sulunteh.

Mr. Williams was accompanied to the graduation ceremony by Ms. DeContee Clements, Diaspora Affairs Liaison at the Embassy of Liberia in Washington, D.C.

Speaking at the well-attended graduation ceremony, Vice Admiral Manson K. Brown of the U.S. Coast Guard, underscored the significance of the training in terms of the knowledge and experience each of the officers acquired to be used for the benefit of their respective countries.

Vice Admiral Brown reaffirmed the United States government's commitment in partnering with friendly countries in ensuring security at the national and international levels.

On behalf of Ambassador Sulunteh, Mr. Williams conveyed sentiments of appreciation, on behalf of the government and people of Liberia, to the Commanding Officer of the United States Coast Guard Training Center, Captain Reed A. Stephenson, and through him to the Government of the United States, for continued support to Liberia, especially in the area of the security sector reform.

Among other areas, the officers learned how to conduct operations in maritime safety, port security, search and rescue, international law of the sea, as well as commanding tactical operations to monitor, detect, and prevent criminal activities at sea. At a time when regional and multilateral partnership is critical to ensure national and international security around the world, the officers were also trained how to coordinate and function within a unified command involving various countries.

Lieutenant Mulbah is the first Liberian officer to graduate from this prestigious maritime training program.
