Liberia has been selected to host the next congress of the West African Journalists Association (WAJA), scheduled to take place in Monrovia next year.
The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) was unanimously chosen to organize the event at a recent meeting of the Executive Committee of WAJA in Abuja, Nigeria.

The event is expected to convene from 29-31 May 2013, during which the body will hold elections for a new three-year mandate for the next leadership. Nigeria's Union of Journalists President Mohammed Gabla is the current President of WAJA.

Press Union of Liberia President Peter Quaqua, who also serves as Treasurer for the sub-regional media body, said the Union was extremely humbled and honored by the opportunity to host WAJA.

While the Union accepts the challenge, Mr. Quaqua says “we will mobilize the support of the entire media community, the Liberian government and the public at large to deliver a resounding congress - the first in the history of the Union.

The West African Journalists Association was established 1986 in Dakar, Senegal, by Journalist Associations and unions of the 16 Member States of ECOWAS to, among other things, reinforce solidarity among its members and support the highest possible standards of journalistic ethics in the sub-region.
