The Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy has reviewed of the Liberian mineral and mining law to Tubmanburg, Bomi County, with a call for the participation of citizens in the region.

At the review consultation Thursday, the citizens said it is important for them to be involved in the decision-making process of companies interested in operating in their areas.

They claimed that over the years, they have not been involved in any decision relating to the operation of companies in their respective counties which include Bomi, Gbarpolu and Grand Cape Mount.

They said the lack of their involvement has the propensity to cause confusion between citizens and companies operating in their region.

In response, Deputy Lands, Mines and Energy Minister for Operations, Sam Russ said the new Mineral and Mining Law would ensure the participation of citizens in matters that affect them.

He said the government wants to ensure that Liberia has one of the best mining regimes that would protect the interest of the people as well as the investors.

Deputy Minister Russ said the government is committed to putting in place policies and laws that would govern the extractive industry.

He said when updated, the new Mineral and Mining Law would ensure transparency and accountability.

“We will ensure that investors get fair return of their investment and the people at the community and national levels benefit from their resources,” Russ added.

He said Liberia has been divided into five regions to ensure the full participation of the citizens in the review process.
