With 85 days to the presidential and representative elections, the National Elections Commission (NEC) has released provisional candidate listing of 783 candidates. The provisional listing includes independent candidates and political parties.
The release of the listing is in keeping with the electoral calendar, a statement from the NEC said.
According to the NEC, 59 candidates from the All Liberian Party (ALP), 54 from the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), 66 from the Alternative National Congress (ANC) and 53 from the ruling Unity Party (UP) has been approved to contest the October elections.
Other candidates endorsed for the pending elections are Change Democratic Action (CDA) 6, Coalition for Liberia’s Progress (CLP) 34, Grassroot Democratic Party of Liberia (GDPL) 23, Liberia Transformation Party (LTP) 49, Liberian National Union (LINU) 18, Liberian People’s Party (LPP) 25, Liberty Party (LP) 60, Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) 32, Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE) 54, Movement for Progressive Change (MPC) 20, People’s Unification Party (PUP) 35, True Whig Party (TWP) 29, United People’s Party (UPP) 63, Victory for Change Party (VCP) 10 , and Vision for Liberia’s Transformation (VOLT) 16. The NEC also approved 77 independent candidates.
NEC said the listing is progressive primary based on the overwhelming endorsement of the Inter-Party Consultative Committee (IPCC) to extend by 10 days the candidate nomination process currently ongoing at the Samuel K. Doe (SKD) Sports Complex in Paynesville. The nomination extension ends July 21, 2017.
Meanwhile, the Commission is urging accepted candidates to pick up their acceptance notices beginning Monday, July 17, 2017 at the SKD Sports Complex.
